The Last Second Choice — Kale's Bitter Remark

Eight years after the fire, Kale Thorne and I are finally getting married. In two weeks, we will have our wedding in Bantfy, beneath the Rockies. Kale's longtime friend, Wes Cole, will be there too. Kale, I can't believe you and Viola are finally tying the knot.

The floor-to-ceiling windows reflect the quiet night over the Rockies. Warm light from the balcony casts the two men's shadows across the hallway wall. Still, eight years. Wes suddenly changes his tone, his eyes settling on the glass in Kale's hand.

Kale, are you still attracted to Viola? Outside the balcony, my hand freezes on the door handle. Kale holds his drink, saying nothing. Those few seconds feel like an eternity.

My heart pounds against my ribs. Attracted? Kale lets out a bitter laugh. Kind of hard to want someone when their body looks like that.
